ABOUT THE BURSARY

Bursaries will be awarded within the following fields of study:
  • Agricultural Economics
  • Biochemistry
  • Entomology and Nematology
  • Genetics
  • Horticulture
  • Microbiology
  • Plant Pathology
  • Research and Technical
  • Soil/ Water Science
The bursary will cover the following expenses: tuition fees (up to a limited amount), accommodation on tertiary campus and prescribed books (up to a limited amount).

ELIGIBILITY – HORTGRO Bursary

Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying:
  • South African citizen,
  • Studying (or intend on studying) in one of the aforementioned fields,
  • Studying (or registered to study) at a recognised tertiary institution in South Africa.

HOW TO APPLY

Download and complete the HORTGRO Bursary Application Form (pdf). Please include the following items in your application pack:
  • ID document (certified copy),
  • Matric certificate (certified copy) OR latest results if currently in Matric,
  • Latest academic results (on tertiary letterhead) if applicable,
  • Proof of registration (on tertiary letterhead),
  • Detailed breakdown of course costs, prescribed books and on campus residence/ accommodation,
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income ID documents (certified copies),
  • Parents/ guardians proof of income,
  • Motivational Letter (on application form),
  • Details of 2 contactable references (on application form).

HORTGRO invests R2.5m in students Stellenbosch – HORTGRO has invested over R2.5m in bursaries and the development of students for . “Hopefully over time most of you will find your niche somewhere in our sector specifically, but also agriculture at large, where we know there are a lot of opportunities,” HORTGRO Executive Director Anton Rabe told the group of students at a cocktail event held at the South African Plant Improvement Organisation (SAPO) Trust in Stellenbosch. HORTGRO has spent more than R20 m on bursaries over the past ten years – as an investment in budding agriculturalists. According to Rabe 65 students had received financial support and were spread across institutions including the Elsenburg College of Agriculture, Cape Peninsula University of Technology, University of Limpopo, Pretoria University, and Stellenbosch University. The students, who were predominantly from previously disadvantaged groups, were given a tour of the SAPO Trust facilities followed by a motivational talk by HORTGRO Science Crop Production Programme Manager Prof Wiehann Steyn.
